Rickey Hatton talk to his brother Matthew

Ricky Hatton tried to talk to his brother Matthew out of his fight life.

European welterweight champion Matthew takes place on Saul Alvarez for the vacant WBC light-middleweight title in California.

But former two-weight world champion the Hitman before he avoid WBC belt was placed on the line.

Hatton said: “Matthew was desperate to take the fight. He asked me my opinion and I said, ‘Matthew you don’t have to take this fight.

“You’re the European champion, you’re climbing up there in the world rankings, bit by bit you’re getting there. You’re improving massively. You don’t have to take this fight.’

“His attitude was: ‘No I’ll beat him.’

“I said, ‘Fair enough.’ I was the same in my career, Amir Khan’s doing the same in his career now. Matthew wanted to take it.”

When Alvarez, 20, he has amassed a daunting 36-fight unbeaten record.

The Mexican is start to follow to the Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr in the net fight.

But Hatton said his brother's biggest upsets seen this game could be one reason.

He said, “I’m very proud of him and it’s not a foregone conclusion.

“When I fought Kostya Tszyu no one gave me a cat in hell’s chance and I completely turned it around.

“Don’t forget, Matthew is really improving now. He’s coming on in leaps and bounds.

“He’s got a wealth of fights behind him now. And he’s got a wealth of experience of when he used to fight on my undercards going to America and preparing so that will stand him in good stead.

“It’s something he wanted to do. We’re right behind him and he’s got a good chance.

“We always knew Matthew had it in him to get to this level. A lot of the time he underperformed, but he’s changed trainers.

“He’s got a full-on trainer now in Bob Shannon. Unfortunately, he was second string to me when he was with Billy Graham.

“Billy had to put the majority of time and effort into me so unfortunately Matthew suffered because of that.

“Now he’s got a full-on trainer he’s improving like crazy. When you think he lost a couple of six-rounders and was disqualified once earlier in his career, you’d have thought he’d have no chance of getting to the level he’s got to.”
